The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that starting January 6, 2023, all air passengers originating from China, Hong Kong or Macau must provide a negative COVID test result to the airline upon departure.

More details can be found on the CDC website. Here are some highlights:

  • Applies to all passengers, regardless of nationality and vaccination status
  • Applies to passengers 2 years old and above
  • Applies to all persons traveling from China via third country transit, and those connecting to a third country by way of the United States
  • The COVID test must be taken no more than 2 days before departure
  • COVID test must be a PCR test or an antigen self-test administered and monitored by a telehealth service and authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Passengers who tested positive more than 10 days before the flight can provide documentation of recovery from COVID in lieu of a negative test result
